Chichester was born May 14, 1863 in Franklinton, Broome Twp,
Schoharie Co, NY while his father was serving in the Civil War.
He grew up in the same area and on August 22, 1885 he married
Elizabeth Jane Engle (Libbie), daughter of Martin H. and Maria
(Wainright) Engle. They were married in the M.E. Church in
Franklinton and they lived in Franklinton until about 1891 when
they moved to a farm on Betta's Brook (now Betty's Brook),
Kortright Twp, Delaware Co, NY. They had two sons, Seth and Guy.
A daughter, Ida was born sometime after Guy, but she died as an

family moved from the farm into the village of South Kortright.
Adelbert, or Dell as he was known to his friends, worked as a
laborer on the town roads and for various farmers. He was an
excellent gardener and in 1941 at the age of 78 he was still
spading his own garden. Libbie was well known around town for her
beautiful quilt tops. In 1943 at the age of 76 she completed one
top which contained 1,926 pieces, each one sewn by hand in
stitches so tiny that you could barely see them. She also canned
her own vegetables and pickles despite the constant pain from
rheumatism in her knee joints and a lame back.
Dell passed away
on August 21, 1945; one day before their 60th anniversary. After
his death Libbie spent the winter months at the home of her son,
Guy and his family who also resided in South Kortright. It was
there that she died in her sleep on December 4, 1948. Both she
and Dell were laid to rest in the Valley View Cemetery at the
foot of Roses Brook just outside of the village of South
